Study Permit Financial Requirements (IRCC)

Financial Requirements

Campbell College • DLI O254363717757 • IRCC amounts effective September 1, 2026

Plan your finances before you apply

If you plan to apply for a Canadian study permit, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) requires you to show that you have sufficient financial resources to pay for your studies and living expenses without relying on employment in Canada.

You must demonstrate funds for: (1) tuition fees, (2) living expenses for yourself and accompanying family members, and (3) transportation to and from Canada for you and accompanying family members.

Minimum living expenses for study permit applications

For applications submitted on or after September 1, 2026, the following IRCC minimum annual living-expense amounts apply in Alberta and all other provinces and territories except Quebec. Tuition and transportation costs are additional.

Number of family members (including applicant) Minimum funds for one year (CAD)
1 $23,448
2 $29,192
3 $35,888
4 $43,572
5 $49,419
6 $55,736
7 $62,054
Each additional member above 7 +$6,318

Example: A student applying alone must demonstrate at least CAD $23,448 for living expenses, plus tuition and transportation. A student applying with two accompanying family members must demonstrate at least CAD $35,888 for living expenses, plus tuition and transportation.

How much funding must I show?

You must show adequate funds for your first year of studies. If your program lasts longer than one year, you must also explain how you intend to fund the remainder of your program. IRCC assesses the amount, source and availability of your financial resources.

Examples of financial supporting documents

Depending on your circumstances, IRCC identifies examples such as:

  • Bank statements for the past six months, with documentation showing the source of funds;
  • Proof of a Canadian bank account in your name, where you have transferred funds to Canada, or a guaranteed investment certificate (GIC);
  • Evidence of an education loan from a bank, scholarship or qualifying financial support;
  • Proof of tuition or housing payments, together with other evidence of funds for outstanding expenses;
  • Evidence of employment income or financial support from an eligible sponsor, supported by relevant documents.

These are examples, not a complete checklist. IRCC may request other evidence, and local visa-office instructions may apply. Paying tuition alone does not establish that you have sufficient funds for living and transportation.

Important information for applicants

IRCC—not Campbell College—determines study permit eligibility and whether your financial documentation is sufficient. Financial thresholds may be updated by IRCC. Please verify the most current requirements before submitting your application.

Letter of acceptance verification

When you submit an application for a study permit, IRCC may request Campbell College to verify the acceptance or enrolment document submitted with your application. Please ensure the document is genuine, accurate and current, and notify Admissions promptly if your admission or enrolment details change. A study permit application may be returned if the required verification is not completed by the applicable deadline.
