Health Insurance for International Students

Health Insurance and Medical Care in Alberta

All international students attending Campbell College must have valid health insurance for the entire time they are studying in Canada.

Medical treatment in Canada can be expensive without insurance. Students should arrange appropriate coverage before travelling to Canada and must not assume they will automatically qualify for provincial health coverage.

Alberta Health Care Insurance Plan

International students may be eligible for the Alberta Health Care Insurance Plan (AHCIP) if they meet Alberta’s eligibility requirements.

You may be eligible if you:

  • Hold a study permit valid for at least 12 months for an Alberta educational institution and intend to live in Alberta for 12 months or longer.
  • Hold a study permit valid for more than six months but less than 12 months and can provide a letter from Campbell College confirming enrolment and your intention to reside in Alberta for at least 12 months.
  • Have transferred from another Canadian province or territory and meet Alberta’s documentation and residency requirements.

Eligibility is determined by the Government of Alberta, not Campbell College. Students should apply as soon as possible after arriving in Alberta and within 90 days of arrival. Review the current requirements on the Government of Alberta AHCIP page.

When private health insurance is required

Students who are not eligible for AHCIP must obtain private health insurance. Private coverage may also be necessary:

  • Before AHCIP coverage becomes effective.
  • If your study permit or intended stay does not meet AHCIP requirements.
  • For prescription medication, dental care, vision care, ambulance services and other services that may not be fully covered by AHCIP.
  • When travelling outside Alberta or Canada.

Campbell College does not endorse a particular insurer. Students should compare coverage, exclusions, waiting periods, deductibles and claim procedures before purchasing a policy.

What students should do before arriving

Before travelling to Canada:

  1. Confirm whether you are likely to qualify for AHCIP.
  2. Arrange private emergency medical insurance for any period when you may not be covered.
  3. Bring copies of your study permit, passport, insurance documents and medical information.
  4. Keep your insurance card and emergency contact information accessible.
  5. Contact the International Student Support Coordinator if you need help locating health-care information.

Campbell College can provide general information and referrals but cannot determine insurance eligibility or approve insurance claims.

Health insurance FAQs

[Insert confirmed Campbell policy: whether insurance is arranged by the student or offered through a named institutional plan.]

No. Eligibility depends on your study permit, residency plans and other Government of Alberta requirements.

Do not assume that you are covered. Review the detailed AHCIP eligibility criteria and arrange private insurance unless the Government of Alberta confirms your eligibility.

Not necessarily. Students may need supplementary private insurance for services that are not insured by AHCIP.
